A Non Resident importer or (NRI) is a business or individual that is not a resident of Canada but can still be held as the Importer of Record for a shipment, or shipments, being imported into Canada. These businesses, despite being based in a foreign country, are licensed as Canadian businesses with both the Canada Border Services Agency and Canada Revenue Agencey. Under this designation, the Non Resident Importer is the responsible party for all aspects of the Importation including payment on all duties and taxes due to the Government of Canada, as well as maintaining all records and files pertaining to the importation process.
